Dear Sir/Madam/X,
The European Institute of Asian Studies and the Embassy of Malaysia in Brussels had the pleasure of organising their ASEAN Forum 2025 on“The Outcome of the 47th ASEAN Summit – The Way Forward on ASEAN-EU Relations Beyond 2025.“ The Forum took place on Friday, 5 December 2025 from 10:00 to 11:30 at the EIAS premises, located in Rue de la Loi 26, 10th Floor, B-1040 Brussels, Belgium and was followed by a Networking Reception with refreshments and Malaysian delicacies.
As ASEAN and the EU navigate a pivotal moment in their long-standing partnership, this discussion will reflect on the outcomes of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits, which took place in Kuala Lumpur on 26-28 October 2025. With Malaysia concluding its successful ASEAN presidency and handing it over to the Philippines, the discussion offered an opportunity to look back at Malaysia’s leadership throughout the past year and the progress achieved during its term, in particular given the formal accession of Timor-Leste to ASEAN as its 11th member state, the KL Peace Accord between Cambodia and Thailand and the signing of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0. With the 50th anniversary of EU-ASEAN, as well as EU-Malaysia Relations approaching in 2027, the Forum also reflected in-depth on ASEAN-EU Relations beyond 2025.
HE Dato’ Mohd Khalid Abbasi Abdul Razak, Ambassador of Malaysia to the EU, provided a brief presentation on the 47th ASEAN Summit outcomes, setting the stage for a forward-looking dialogue on how the Philippines’ incoming presidency can open a new chapter for deeper ASEAN-EU cooperation. The Embassy of Malaysia and EIAS ASEAN Forum 2025 aimed to highlight emerging opportunities, challenges, shared priorities and pathways to strengthen political, economic and sustainable development ties as they move into a new era of partnership and enhanced engagement.
