Over the past couple of years EIAS conducted numerous studies to map Taiwanese investment in the EU, and looked at ways to strengthen EU-Taiwan trade and investment relations. In 2014, EIAS embarked on a study comprising of a quantitative and qualitative part focuses on Taiwanese Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) in the European Union (EU). Through a macro-view the project shed a light on the Taiwanese economic presence in the EU through its OFDI. This was done with the intention to encourage the strengthening of already significant investment relations between the European Union and Taiwan.
In 2015, complementary to the research conducted in 2014 the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS) has conducted research on 10 leading Taiwanese enterprises doing business in the EU in order to identify the key factors that drive their activities in Europe. The report aims at understanding the rationale behind the individual decisions to invest in the European Union and identifying a set of common hurdles and issues that Taiwanese firms face when entering the European market.

Taiwan’s Outward Foreign Direct Investment into the EU and its Member States (2014)
The EU’s investment potential is still under-explored by Taiwanese companies, an assessment on the scope and impact of Taiwan investment into the European Union is henceforth justified. The first research paper presents the data on Taiwan’s OFDI into the EU and a quantitative analysis of the data gathered. The second research paper presents a more qualitative analysis of the data and is complementary to the quantitative findings in the first paper. In addition the second research paper will centre on the interpretation of the data obtained, and shall forecast impending consequences and recommendations, and depict potential and strategic opportunities for Taiwanese investors.

A Survey on 10 Leading Taiwanese Enterprises Investing in the EU and its Member States (2015)
Drawing on the 2014 report “Taiwan’s Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) Into The European Union And Its Member States – Quantitative & Qualitative Research”, the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS), with the support of the Taipei Representative Office in the European Union (EU), has conducted research on 10 leading Taiwanese enterprises doing business in the EU in order to identify the key factors that drive their activities in Europe. This new report collects a selection of 10 Taiwanese companies as case studies. Using the information and data collected through a questionnaire and interviews, the report aims to understand the reasons and motives behind the decision to invest in Europe and identify a set of common hurdles and issues that Taiwanese firms face when entering the European market and invest in EU-28.
