EUIndoPAC Jean Monnet Teaching Module

The EUIndoPac Jean Monnet Teaching Module (40 hours) offers a unique way to learn about the EU's policy and legal developments impacting the Indo-Pacific region. This crash course aims at preparing a new generation of law and policy students to understand the complexities of the EU's evolving global role and its impact on the Indo-Pacific region. The Module is delivered by UCLouvain, IEE St Louis (180 in QS World University) and the European Institute for Asian Studies. Upon successful completion of the Module, participants will be issued a Certificate of Attendance.

The EU and the Indo-Pacific Region
Challenges and Opportunities

This crash course evolves around four key regulatory areas:

  • Promotion of free, fair and sustainable trade through bilateral treaties;
  • EU strategic autonomy and screening of foreign investments;
  • Sustainability in regulating trade in products and commodities;
  • EU digital strategy.

The Module shall enable students to grasp the main political and legal issues related to the functioning of the EU and its external role in the Indo-Pacific.

> Registration

The Crash Course primarily targets students (Bachelor of Laws holders) as well as practitioners and experts from the Indo-Pacific region. Please note that there are no tuition fees.

The applicants must submit their application before April 29th 2024 to Prof. de Sadeleer by email to euindopac@outlook.fr. Applications should include the following documents: 

  • curriculum vitae,
  • a recommendation letter from a university professor,
  • a motivation letter,
  • the proof that they have at minimum a B2 English level,
  • if he/she will participate online or presential.

Upon completion of the selection procedure all applicants will be notified (by the end of May 2024). 

> Location and timing

The Module will take place as a presential and online teaching program at UCLouvain (QS 180 World University Ranking), Saint-Louis campus in center Brussels, capital of the EU, and will be delivered as an intensive interactive unit (40 hours) 3 to 8 June 2024 between 9:00 am to noon Brussels time (CET), plus 2 1/2 hours seminars in the afternoons.

> Teaching Activities

  • Teaching Activity 1 (6h.): Introduction to EU law and policy
  • Teaching Activity 2 (6h.): Bilateral trade agreements between the EU and Indo-Pacific countries
  • Teaching Activity 3 (6h.): EU unilateral rules promoting fair and sustainable trade with the Indo-Pacific region
  • Teaching Activity 4 (6h.): EU strategic autonomy and screening of foreign investments
  • Teaching Activity 5 (6h.): EU digital strategy and regulations

The lectures will be given by lead lecturers and researchers with extensive international background, proven competence in EU law and policy and interdisciplinary and practical experience in the EU and the Indo-Pacific region.
