WHAT EIAS STANDS FOR

Fostering constructive dialogue between Asia and the EU/on EU-Asia cooperation

The European Institute for Asian Studies – EIAS is a leading think tank strongly embedded in Brussels, the capital of the European Union. EIAS focuses on EU-Asia relations and on strengthening the ties between Asia and Europe by ensuring in-depth research and pioneering innovative concepts. Founded in 1989 EIAS has built up a unique expertise and deep understanding of EU-Asia relations over the past three decades, covering the specific geographical scope of Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asia and their relations with the EU. The EIAS research projects, events, activities and capacity building initiatives cover a wide range of topics, with a main focus on policy, trade, investments, finances, connectivity, energy, logistics, development, research, culture and education through fostering cooperative relations between the public and the private sector in Europe and Asia. Over the past 35 years, the EIAS team has accumulated a wide range of knowledge and in-depth expertise, combining the experience of senior specialists in EU-Asia relations. The EIAS board consists of senior former EU officials, academics and members of the corporate sector with distinguished careers and expertise in and on Asia. The EIAS work is project-centred, carried out mainly by conducting research projects and in-depth analysis on EU-Asia affairs, the production of related publications, the organisation of events, including conferences, briefing seminars and expert roundtable discussions, as well as training programmes and capacity-building workshops.

As a think tank on EU-Asia relations, our role is first of all pioneering new ideas and initiatives, as well as identifying, developing and implementing new potentials in the cooperation and relations between Asia and the EU. Therefore, EIAS acts proactively as a platform builder for a positive constructive dialogue and as a catalyst for new thinking and new solutions for all Asian and European stakeholders.

The EIAS work programme has a strong analytical focus and a very pragmatic solution-driven approach covering EU-Asia developments and cooperation, with a focus on economic and monetary affairs, trade, finance, investment, connectivity, geopolitics, security, EU institutions, industrial and technological innovation, R&D, AI, digitalisation, energy, environment, CSR, sustainable development, migration and on improving people-to-people ties through education, cultural and other types of exchanges.

Thanking you in advance and looking forward to welcoming you as an EIAS Member,

The EIAS Team
