The European Institute for Asian Studies and the University of East Anglia had the pleasure of organising a Roundtable Discussion on “Recalibrating Europe’s role in the Indo-Pacific in an era of uncertainty: What can the EU do?” The Discussion took place on Thursday, 27 June 2024, from 14:30 PM to 16:00 PM at the EIAS premises, located in Rue de la Loi 26, 10th Floor, B-1040 Brussels, Belgium.

Date: Thursday, 27 June 2024
Time: 14:30 PM – 16:00 PM
Venue: EIAS, Rue de la Loi 26, B-1040 Brussels

Ravaged by war, economic malaise and societal divisions, Europe faces many grave and expanding challenges. In this context, the Indo-Pacific offers an area of enormous potential when it comes to refocusing attention, reshaping European identity and reorientating policy. As such, this discussion invites academic experts, policymakers and stakeholders to engage constructively with Europe’s changing role in the Indo-Pacific from a holistic perspective. This includes, but is not limited to, issues that encompass climate change; humanitarian intervention; alliances and institutions; joint military exercises; health diplomacy; democratisation; and technological transformation (including generative artificial intelligence (AI)). To this end, key questions addressed by the panellists are how Europe can engage with actors in the Indo-Pacific like ASEAN, China, India, Japan, Korea, the US, but also Australia and New Zealand. For instance, wow can Europe work with and around US foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific? How can Europe’s positive relationship with Japan and Korea be most effectively further broadened and deepened in the future?
