The European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS) and the University of East Anglia had the pleasure of organising a Panel Discussion on “Security Transitions and Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific – What Can Europe Do?”, which was held on Monday, 23 June 2025 from 16:00 to 18:00 CET at the European Institute for Asian Studies, rue de la Loi 26, 10th floor, B-1040 Brussels, Belgium. The event was followed by a Networking Reception.
The advent of a second Donald Trump-led administration has been sending shockwaves across the globe, challenging the multilateral global order as we have known it since World War II. This is not only majorly impacting the Transatlantic alliance, it is also shaping Europe’s relations with the Indo-Pacific. These geopolitical transitions are being felt in a wide array of policy domains, ranging from green energy and climate action, to trade, military alliances, and even the names, ownership and administration of geostrategic sites. This interactive panel discussion will discuss the implications of these uncertainties from the perspective of Europe’s security relations with the Indo-Pacific. How should Europe engage with its partners in the region, and what can be done to mitigate the impact of shifting global perspectives, especially in the security realm? What will be the future role of NATO and how does it engage with partners in the Indo-Pacific?
