Manuel Widmann is a final year Master´s student at the department of East Asian Economy and Society at the University of Vienna. During his studies, he conducted research on various fields related to the political and economic sphere of East Asia, including comparative social movements in Hong Kong and Taiwan, Chinese innovation policy and economic diplomacy. His Master´s thesis is dealing with the effectiveness of Chinese economic statecraft and the importance of governmental control over the commercial actors involved. Furthermore, Manuel Widmann spent a semester in Beijing and one semester in Taipei studying Chinese.
Prior to joining EIAS, Manuel Widmann worked for the NGO AustrianStartups, where he was actively involved in conducting comprehensive research projects as well as publishing policy papers and recommendations for the Austrian government.
During his time at EIAS, his research will focus on developments related to China´s foreign policy, EU-China- and EU-ASEAN-relations, with a special focus on Chinese soft-power and related implications.
