On 28 February 2013, the European Parliament hosted a workshop on the EU's trade and economic relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), during which the EIAS report to come "EU-ASEAN FTAs: does one size fit all?" was presented. The report, currently written by EIAS under the direction of Mr. Ludo Cuyvers, Professor emeritus of the University of Antwerp and chairman of EIAS, was introduced by Dr Lurong Chen from UNU-CRIS, who is also contributing to the final text.
The Parliament's workshop also hosted an exchange of opinions on EU-ASEAN trade between Mr. Mauro Petriccione, director of the DG trade of the European Commission, H.E. Ong Eng Chuan, Singapore Ambassador, H.E. Dato' Zainuddin Yahya, Malaysia Ambassador, and H.E. Pham Sanh Chau, Vietnam Ambassador. The ambassadors expressed their point of view and expectation with regards to the FTA between the EU and their countries, pointing out the benefits and the limits of the negotiations with the EU. Furthermore, the paper "A moving target: EU's trade strategy towards ASEAN" by Professor Jacques Pelkmans, from the Centre for European Policy Studies, was presented. The European Parliament will issue a more detailed report on the workshop in the next future.
